Online Privacy and
Digital Citizenship
Keep it Private
With a partner, read over these "rules" that websites must honor if they are asking for information from kids ages 13 or younger AND/OR they provide content (games, activities, stories, information, etc) for kids.
The United States law called "Children's Online Privacy Protection Act" (COPPA) requires websites to protect children's information. These private pieces of information could include:
* full name (first and last)
* home address
* name of school and your school address
* email address
* telephone number
* Social Security number
* any other information that could be used to identify you or contact you
This law helps to protect children that are ages 13 and younger.
Websites must:
*post a link to the privacy policy
*the link must be on the home page and on any other page that asks for your information
* the link must be clear and explain how the website protects children's privacy and safety.
WHY is this important?
*if we didn't have it, websites could use your private information however they want to
*websites could even sell your information to other companies who want information about kids - this could result in a lot of unwanted
emails, people wanting to sell you things, and companies that want to target you with their ads.
